Yay, my second ever model!

halojones_3

This pretty friend of mine is a self-described artist, educator, student, and adventurer. She currently lives in New York City, so you can see that during our day at the beach she enjoyed the Florida sunshine. She chose to model for me in order to show her support for me as an artist and to help me grow as a photographer. Her nom du plume, Halo Jones, is based on an Alan Moore comic: ‘Where did she go?’ ‘Out’. ‘What did she do?’ ‘Everything’.”

For this shoot we drove down to Haulover Beach…

I played with some of these on photoshop a bit because I didn’t realize till now that I had her face cast in shadow on accident…

  • I have others to post that I took with my underwater camera

You are getting better. You need to learn how to handle backlighting. You could have used a little fill in flash to brighten her face. I like the portrait at top a lot.

  • Wow. I’m really freaking impressed. These are just stunning!

  • Sequoia, that photo shoot you did is very artistic and very natural. I think you should pursue a career in that type of photography and even an art project as well.

  • These are fantastic! I think you have happened onto one of the cardinal rules of photography: take pictures of stunning naked women, and you cannot go wrong.

If you are having problems with shadows, maybe a reflector? They’re cheap and easy. Or (as painful as it is for me to suggest) there is always early morning and dusk, when light is less harsh.

Great stuff! The model and the location just seem to go together so well. #7 is my favorite. Nice showcase of talent for the photographer and model. I would love to see more from this combination.

i like the fifth one down mostest.

excellent colors. you really have an eye for this shizzzzz.

    well done.

  • Awesome stuff, Sequoia. Looks totally professional to me. Halo is truly gorgeous too. Thanks for sharing, and keep up the good work!

  • totally perfect. wow. the angles of her body and the way they fit into the frame are really exceptional. her smile is nice to see in nude photography. kind of rare! so much sexier than that forced sultry face so many girls try to make in naked pictures.
hell yeah, your passion is growing growing.

Good job. Watch the horizons, level is good unless you are going for an artsy look, then go way off level. That way people will know you meant it to be that way. Also wait until your camera focuses to take the shot. Overall great work.

  • I love the lighting, and what a joyous smile!

  • I love how happy and natural these are… just beautiful!

    Wow!!

Full of life and energy – both the woman and the photos. Terrific stuff.

Whilst I have been a keen amateur photographer myself since I was 10, and have photographed many people naked, I am always going to come down on the side of images of real life – than on ones that are technically correct.

Far too many nudes are technically perfect – and utterly sterile. So I would concentrate on capturing the moment and improve the technical aspects slowly as you go and see the results of each shoot.

Fantastic and thank you for sharing them with us and, of course, many thanks to Halo as well for sharing herself with the world.

Lovely, vivacious and delightfully unpretentious. Thank you.

Wow,,,Stunning. I have to say great job.
    I am really impressived.

Model is “magnifique” (i think when i see her, a little of p.j harvey :) – but it’s not musical…here), i like the light on the “halojones_7″ shot (it’s “out of time” sort of light – for me), and important thing here…i feel respect with the model.

    Bravo !

    Thanks for the work,

    Alex.

  • These are stunning.

I would gladly model for you!

  • Burger

These are great photos! Keep up the good work.

  • Great pictures, Sequoia! And Halo is very pretty!! Yum!

Very good job Sequoia. You seem to be improving with each shoot. Halo was a teriffic model and seemed to be really enjoying herself which is great to see in a nude model. Would recommend that in some shots you go for a full length body shot and include the models’ feet. Also try to include shots of the back as many women have a beautiful back as well as a backside. There are ways to include the model’s face such as having her turn her head toward you with her back toward you etc…You may also want to use the model on the dry part of the beach itself as it will give you some contrasts in surfaces with the models smooth skin. Something else you may want to try is to recreate some of the shots you took of yourself earlier with other models just to see how the results are. Anyway keep up the good work.

  • come photograph me or i can come to you. add weird props to a photo and it always gives a lot of depth and mystery. you don’t really need advice though. your natural talent will lead you to perfection and $$$$

  • Her smile is MAGIC!! I love the colors and didn’t think for one morsel of a second about technicalities, which indicates to me that they are *perfect* (whether they are “technically” or not). Happy, natural, beautiful, evocative . . . yeah.

That is a very professional-looking set that still manages to be joyous, vital, unforced and unpretentious, so you can be justly proud, no doubt about it :-)

Of course it would be churlish to ignore Halo’s contribution: from the little work I’ve done with models, male and female, there’s definitely a certain knack to it, and the results you get with a model who knows how to model really speak for themselves.
As I rather think they do here. After all, even if the photographer has the idea for a given shoot, its still a collaboration _with_ the model…
Oh, and if ever there was definitive proof of the old aphorism “the sexiest thing a person can wear is a smile”, I think Halo’s it! :-)

Fundamentally, you’ve amply demonstrated (again!) that you really know how to compose a picture, and that’s most of the ‘battle’ won: for one example from this set, even if it wasn’t a conscious decision on your part, I suspect that its no accident that you put the horizon line where you did in each shot that it is visible in. That innate compositional sense can and does improve with experience, which, I think, points to a rather bright future :-)

I do have technical comments to make, but I’ll supply them by email if and when I can work out a way to convey them in a form that’ll actually be useful for you in future: proscriptive comments are of little use in an art form that is simply about “putting the right-sized frame round the right piece of time” (and I wish I knew who’s quote that was originally!)

    Sahara!!! ;)
You need to bring this doll back to Melbourne to share some shoots with you. (For your fans here, that’s Melbourne, Australia, not FL!)
