what's for dinner, sequoia?

fried red velvet okra

fried red velvet okra (homegrown)

We only had a few okra plants come up, so I made fried okra! Just take some okra, soak it in eggs and then coat it with some corn meal and spices and throw it in the frying pan.

Homegrown black-seeded simpson lettuce with avocados and nasturtium flowers. Nasturtium flowers are edible and they’re really good for your kidneys.

lemon balm mojitos

Lemon-balm mojitos! Basically like a regular mojito except you substitute the mint for lemon-balm and the lime for a lemon. Yummy! I have a ton of lemon balm growing, and am drying it out to make tea with as well.

homemade mustard

Homemade mustard! Rosemary-Orange Mustard, Honey Dijon Mustard and Beer-Thyme Mustard.

To make your own mustard, all you need is mustard seeds. I ordered mine from Amazon, they were pretty cheap. I ordered yellow and brown seeds.

mustard seeds

You can grind up the seeds in a coffee grinder and then you have mustard flour. You can use just the mustard flour for a smoother mustard, or mix it with some seeds for a grainier texture.

Why make your own mustard? Well, despite the fact that its creative and sustainable to make your own condiments once in a while, the homemade stuff won’t be laden with high fructose corn syrup, artificial coloring or nasty preservatives.

I found most of the mustard recipes online with a quick google search. I’ve also made ketchup, BBQ sauce and coconut oil mayonnaise this week as well.

Keep in mind that the homemade condiments you make won’t ever taste exactly like the ones in the store because they have lots of fancy chemicals to spice their products up with, but thats ok because your homemade condiments won’t give you cancer like the ones in the store.

:-)
