I like your insight that reconnecting with Nature A) doesn't have to happen in a perfect, idyllic setting in order to be genuine, and B) that it is just as much about the energy a person brings to the situation as anything else. I think that part of my problem was that I had an all-or-nothing mindset; like, if I couldn't go live like Thoreau, then I wasn't doing it right (if that makes sense). But that's behind me now. I'm going to take your advice and work on the small improvements that I surely can make in my current situation. Thanks for the thoughts. I'm glad you decided to talk more about your living situation, despite the negative aspects of it. There seems to be a movement of sorts in our society away from crass consumerism and back in the direction of traditional independent living. This is partly the result of the economic downturn, but is also related to a sort of psychic exhaustion resulting from the constant cycle of debt-work-buy that we've been trapped in for the last 30 or 40 years. In this blog post you've shown how you're making the best of a pretty poor situation and that can definitely serve to inspire others to follow suit. Sometimes all it takes is the knowledge that it's possible - that there's SOMETHING one can do. You've certainly shown that here. This is actually really interesting. Organic food and renewable energy are slightly more expensive but you save money on having no car and no bus fares up to 10 miles. I’d say stay in the city,
